The spirit of volunteerism flared as communities and various stakeholders converge for the 32nd International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on September 16, 2017 in Barangay Digman, Bacoor City, Cavite.

Just as the celebration theme “Sama-sama para sa Karagatan”, volunteers from the Bacoor Government Center; Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON; Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO), Cavite; Cavite State University; Bacoor National High School-Tabing Dagat; Toyota-Bacoor; St. Dominic College of Asia; Saint Francis of Assisi College; Bacoor Public Safety Unit; City Social Welfare and Development; University of Perpetual Help-Molino; Family Care Development Center; Bureau of Jail Management and Penology; Bureau of Fire Protection; Philippine National Police; Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary; and Brother Guardians come together, through the initiative of the City Government of Bacoor, all for a clean and healthy ocean.

“Such ICC activity hopes to change the people’s perception about solid wastes which affect the ocean, and change their values and behavior to volunteerism”, said DENR CALABARZON Regional Director Arsenio N. Tanchuling.

“Based on our previous cleanups, most of the wastes collected are plastic bags, bottles, cups, and cigarette butts, that have great negative impact on the organisms thriving in our ocean. Hopefully, we could develop our values to reduce wastes,” he added.

In her opening message, Bacoor City Mayor Lani Mercado-Revilla lamented on the filthy situation of the water bodies due to the thoughtless actions of humans, the supposed stewards of God’s creations. However, she expressed that she never loses hope for there are people who still care for the environment and are willing to volunteer and spread the good deed with others.

“We really have to continually work together towards making our environment clean and healthy to provide a better living place for ourselves and for the marine life,” Revilla urged the participants.

Tanchuling said the event is symbolic only so as to encourage the communities, but there is also a simple way which people can use in their homes every day to help prevent wastes from going into the waterways and the ocean, and that is solid waste segregation.

ICC is an annual worldwide event initiated by the Ocean Conservancy since 1986, which aims to engage volunteers to remove trash from the world’s beaches and waterways, identify the sources of debris, and change the behaviors that cause marine debris in the first place.
