Revolutionary Composting for Gardens, A Competition Launched in Lucena City, Quezon
DENR CALABARZON·TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2019

“This is the beginning of our evolution as real citizens of the region and of the country,” Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) CALABARZON Regional Executive Director Ipat Luna fervently declared, referring to a ‘revolutionary’ garden competition entitled “Sustainable Re-Greening and the Art of Composting” or SRAC which was launched during the Tayo ang Kalikasan’s (TAK) 1stConvention in Lucena City on June 25, 2019.

“Ito ang pinaka-hindi ko malilimutang initiative dahil baka ito na ang simula na tinitingnan natin ang ating responsibilidad sa pagiging hindi lang sibilisadong mamamayan, kung hindi, mas mataas pang antas,” she expressed.

The TAK-SRAC is a garden competition initiated by the Federation of Lucena Homeowners Association, Inc. and the DENR-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, Quezon which will promote composting as the best source of organic fertilizers and, at the same time, recycling which hopes to lessen the volume of solid wastes which will otherwise end up in landfills.

Luna said, based on the computations made by the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau CALABARZON, about 52% of the solid wastes generated within the region are unmanaged – littered, burnt and buried, practices which are against the law.

She said the way to cut the 52% unmanaged waste in half is to have a composting revolution in the region.

Addressing the 200 plus participants mostly coming from homeowners’ associations in the whole of Lucena City, she explained that the garden competition is a start for every households in the area, to solve the problem of unmanaged waste as they will be able to examine what goes in and what comes out of their respective homes.

“You are starting for the rest of us and I hope marami po kaming gagaya sa inyo dahil kung hindi tayo kakalinga sa pamamamahala sa bahay kagaya ng pagkalinga sa bayan ay matatabunan tayo ng katakot-takot na basura,” she said.

The Regional Executive Director also stressed that is it not only important to reduce the use of single-use plastics, but also to give up the use of all synthetic materials that cannot degrade in the environment.

“Down the line, we have to mine the landfills because the earth is limited and we need the synthetic materials (to keep getting used). Kailangang lahat ng materyales sa mundo ay mabigyan natin ng pakinabang at nagsisimula ‘yan syempre sa ating kabahayan,” she said.

“Kung lahat ng bagay na papasok sa ating kabahayan ay mabibigyan natin ng pakinabang, tayo po ay umaangat sa ating pagkatao. We are not only being good citizens, but we are evolving to a higher state of being,” she added.

The TAK-SRAC is open to all residents of Lucena City who are members of a homeowners’ association or any organized group of homeowners. Those from Lucena City who are interested to participate may coordinate with the DENR-PENRO Quezon through landline at 710-3133 and email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The DENR-PENRO Quezon plans to have the garden competition replicated in other municipalities in the province.
