Survey and Identification of Invasive and Alien Species (IAS) and Potentially Harmful Exotic Species CY 2011


The objective of this activity is to develop an information and data base of invasive alien species in the established Protected Area such as Mt. Palaypalay Mataas na Gulod Protected Landscape in the Province of Cavite. This may serve as basis for developing control program through appropriate management plan and strategy for PA, minimizing its destructive effect to natural species and its habitats. This activity can also provide inputs in the development of guidelines/action plan that enhance our understanding on the impacts and control measures on IAS.

The survey conducted includes inventory of forest land, open/grassland and PACBRMA areas within Mt Palay-palay Mataas na Gulod PL. The Ecosystem Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) was coordinated in identification of grasses and shrubs.

With the inventory and identification conducted, the following conclusions were formed:

1. The Mt. Palay-palay Mataas na Gulod Protected Landscape has invasive alien species found in the secondary forest and open grassland. The IAS observed for tree species were introduced as planting materials for reforestation and other tree planting activities in the area. While the shrubs found in grasslands/open spaces have grown naturally with single species dominating per site/quadrat;

2. That the species of Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) have shown the ability to produce regenerants on the sampled areas;

3. The species of Acacia auriculiformes, Tectona grandis and Gmelina arborea were planted and survived in patches, however; the species have no regenerants found underneath within and near the sampled areas;

4. The IAS on secondary forest have shown no domination over the area however, the species of mahogany have grown it’s regenerants as observed on the sampled quadrats;

5. The IAS on grassland areas (shrubs) has shown single species domination on the established quadrats, however, such finding was observed during the period where rainfall is abundant.

Based on the results of this activity, it was recommended that same activity is suggested to be conducted on other existing ecosystems of MPPMGL like the cultivation area of the PACBRMA and the plantation areas under different programs of DENR, civil groups, etc. Also, this study shall be conducted on different period of the year where there is small amount of rainfall in the area. This is to find out the dominant species especially on grasslands.
